thoughts from my brain. my perception of the world around me.

India's election is drawing to a close. And, what drama it has been. We've had 5 years of governance by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Not blemishless, mind you but, stable. There have been hiccups like the racial riots that took place in Gujarat. And, that was followed up by the victory of Narendra Modi in the state elections.

But, on the whole, a pretty good 5 years. There has been political stability. The country has grown economically and, we have made some progress in international relationships. The problem with the BJP is the presence of Hindu fanatics in it's midst. That has always been it's problem.

But, in these elections, we've had film stars galore. People who have not the foggiest notion about governance, economics, politics. What they do know is how to make money for themselves and, they do know how to portray themselves to the public at large. And, they've all won. This is amazing. Really amazing.

But, it does not stop here. The Congress Party seems to be all set to form the next government by tying up with small parties. So, the jockeying will begin and, I'm pretty sure that the age of political instability will once again come to India.

This is bad. Now, I have no hassles with the Congress coming to power. As a party, it has some good and able people. What I cannot stomach is the fact that Sonia Gandhi may become our Prime Minister.

First, she's a woman who came into politics after the death of her husband, to try and stop investigations into the family's account, on charges of corruption. Her only interest is to keep the family's hold on power alive.

And, she's Italian.

Now, what I cannot understand is how we, a country of 1 billion people cannot find another family. Another individual to govern the country. Are we so poor in intellect then, that we have to resort to a family, an Italian to govern us?

If this is indeed so, then why did we fight for independence from the British?

If Sonia Gandhi becomes Prime Minister, as indeed she seems destined to become, then this is certainly India's day of shame.
